You get into the car, switch on the AC, and a stale, damp smell hits you. It is one of the most common car complaints in India, especially after monsoon and during humid months. The good news: in most cases it can be fixed at home.
What causes that AC smell?
- Moisture in the AC system. Water condenses inside the AC unit, and if it doesn't dry out, mould and bacteria can grow and blow a musty smell into the cabin.
- A dirty cabin air filter. It traps dust, leaves and pollen. Over time it gets clogged and starts to smell.
- Food, spills and damp mats. Crumbs under the seats and wet floor mats are a big source of odour.
- Strong synthetic fresheners. Many cheap fresheners only cover a bad smell with a heavier one, which can make the cabin feel stuffy.
5 simple fixes
- Change or clean the cabin filter. Ask your service centre to check it at your next visit. It is inexpensive and often the main culprit.
- Dry out the AC before you park. For the last couple of minutes of your drive, switch off the AC compressor and keep the fan running. This helps dry the system.
- Air out the car. Park in the sun with windows slightly open for a while, and take out the floor mats to dry and dust them.
- Clean the vents and seats. Wipe vents with a soft brush and cloth, and vacuum under the seats.
- Choose an essential-oil based freshener. Once the source is cleaned, a gentle natural fragrance keeps the cabin pleasant. Our Hanging Pod Car Freshener is infused with pure essential oils, neutralises odours and releases a consistent, gradual fragrance that is never overpowering. It comes in Citrus Lemon Blast and Rose Rush.
When to see a mechanic
If the smell is very strong, sweet or burning, or water drips inside the cabin, get the AC system checked by a professional. That can mean a blocked drain line or a leak.
