Eucalyptus oil has a sharp, cool, camphor-like scent that feels instantly fresh. It is a favourite during monsoon and winter, and for anyone who wants a clean, energising atmosphere at home. Here are the most practical ways to use it.

1. In a diffuser for a fresh, open feel

Add 3 to 4 drops of pure eucalyptus essential oil to a diffuser with water. It pairs well with lemon or lavender if you find eucalyptus strong on its own. Run for 30 minutes at a time.

2. A warm steam bowl

Many people like the sensation of a gentle aromatic steam when the air feels heavy:

  1. Pour hot (not boiling) water into a heat-safe bowl placed on a stable table.
  2. Add 2 to 3 drops of eucalyptus oil.
  3. Lean over at a comfortable distance, close your eyes and breathe slowly for a few minutes.

Be careful with hot water and never let children do this alone. This is a comfort ritual, not a replacement for medical care. If you have asthma, a lung condition or breathing trouble, ask your doctor first.

3. Bathroom and shower freshener

Put 2 to 3 drops on the shower floor (away from where you will step) before a warm shower. The steam carries the aroma through the bathroom.

4. Wardrobe, shoe rack and closet freshener

Add a few drops to a cotton ball and place it in a small dish or pouch in the wardrobe. It keeps stored clothes smelling clean. Do not let oil touch fabric directly as it can stain.

5. Room and linen spray

In a spray bottle, mix 100 ml water with 15 to 20 drops of eucalyptus oil. Shake well before each use and mist the air or curtains lightly.

6. A massage blend for tired muscles

Dilute 6 drops in 30 ml of carrier oil (about 1%) and massage into shoulders or calves after a long day. Patch test first and avoid face, eyes and broken skin.

Safety first

  • Eucalyptus oil is strong. Always dilute before applying to skin.
  • Do not use on or near the faces of babies and young children, and do not ingest it.
  • Use extra care if pregnant, nursing or with epilepsy or asthma, and check with your doctor.
  • Keep it away from pets, especially cats and dogs, and from eyes.
