An aroma diffuser or oil burner is the easiest way to make your home smell fresh and calm. But the first time you open the box, a few questions come up: how many drops, how long, and is it safe? This guide answers them.

Diffuser or oil burner: what is the difference?

Ultrasonic diffuser: uses water and vibration to release a fine mist of scented water vapour. It usually has a timer and auto shut-off. Our Aroma Air Diffuser with Bluetooth and app control is an example.

Oil burner: a small dish heated gently by a tealight or electric element. Water and a few drops of oil warm up and release scent. Our Aroma Oil Burner works this way.

How to use an ultrasonic diffuser

  1. Place it on a flat, hard surface, away from walls and electronics.
  2. Fill with clean water up to the max line (use filtered water if your tap water is hard).
  3. Add 3 to 5 drops of essential oil per 100 ml of water.
  4. Close the lid, switch on and choose a mist setting.
  5. Run it for 30 to 60 minutes at a time, then give your nose a break.

How to use an oil burner

  1. Fill the top dish with water about halfway.
  2. Add 4 to 6 drops of essential oil.
  3. Light the tealight or switch on the element.
  4. Top up water as it evaporates so the dish never dries out.
  5. Put the flame out or unplug when you leave the room.

How to clean your diffuser

Once a week, unplug it, empty the water, wipe the tank with a cotton bud dipped in a little white vinegar, rinse and dry. This stops oil build-up and keeps the mist smooth.

Safety checklist

  • Never leave an open flame unattended.
  • Keep burners and diffusers out of reach of children and pets.
  • Ventilate the room and stop if you feel dizzy, get a headache or have trouble breathing.
  • Be careful in homes with pets, especially cats and birds, and around babies.
  • Use only pure essential oils in diffusers, not cooking or baby oils.

FAQ

Can I use any essential oil in a diffuser?

Most pure essential oils work. Avoid thick, sticky carrier oils, which can clog the unit.

Why is my diffuser not misting?

Check the water level, make sure the lid is closed and clean the plate with vinegar.
