Struggling to unwind at night? Here are six easy, safe ways to use lavender essential oil in your bedtime routine, from diffusers to pillow mists.
Read the story

A good night's sleep starts long before your head touches the pillow. The scent of lavender is one of the most popular choices for a calming evening routine, and for good reason: it is soft, familiar and widely loved. Small studies have linked lavender aroma with feeling more relaxed and sleeping a little better, though it is a comfort ritual, not a medical treatment.

Here are six simple ways to bring pure lavender essential oil into your night.

1. Diffuse it 30 minutes before bed

Add 3 to 5 drops of lavender oil to an ultrasonic diffuser filled with water and run it while you get ready for bed. Switch it off once you are in bed, or use a timer, so the room stays fresh rather than heavy. A smart diffuser makes this effortless, see our diffusers and burners.

2. Make a quick pillow mist

Fill a small spray bottle with water and add 10 to 15 drops of lavender oil. Shake well before every spray, since oil and water separate. Lightly mist the air around your bed, not directly on your face.

3. Use a cotton pad near your pillow

Put one or two drops on a cotton pad or tissue and place it beside (not under) your pillow. It gives a gentle scent without staining your bedding.

4. Add it to a warm bath

Never drop essential oil straight into bath water, because it floats and can irritate skin. Mix 4 to 6 drops into a spoonful of carrier oil (coconut or almond) or a little unscented body wash first, then stir into the bath.

5. Try a calming hand or foot massage

Dilute 6 drops of lavender oil in 30 ml of carrier oil (about a 1% blend) and massage into hands, feet or shoulders before bed. Do a patch test first on your inner forearm.

6. Build the whole routine

Scent works best as a signal. Pair it with the same steps each night: dim the lights, put your phone away, sip something warm and light your diffuser. Your brain starts to link the aroma with winding down.

Safety notes

  • Always dilute before applying to skin. Never apply neat oil.
  • Essential oils are for external and aroma use only. Do not ingest.
  • If you are pregnant, nursing, have a medical condition or are using it around infants, check with your doctor first.
  • Keep oils away from children and pets, and ventilate the room. Cats are especially sensitive.

How many drops of lavender oil should I use in a diffuser?

3 to 5 drops per 100 ml of water is a good starting point. Use less in a small room.

Can I leave a diffuser on all night?
